DRIFT.NET.NZ provides solutions, online and offline, utilising open source software and open standards when possible. There is a large body of existing open source software that is free to use. SourceForge has over 50,000 projects! There's no sense reinventing wheels; better to build on and extend existing open source software.
Open source software is collaboratively developed to meet common objectives. The source code is available and can be changed and redistributed. There are no license fees or upgrade fees. Open source development helps to ensure the long term viability of data and applications. Anyone can access the source and maintain or improve the software, so there is no reliance on vendors who may cease to exist.
The Internet has made distributed development possible on a large scale. Large corporations, including IBM, Sun (SunSource), AOL Time Warner and Oracle have seen the advantages of open source and are now contributing to open source projects.
DRIFT.NET.NZ currently implements and hosts a variety of open source systems including: e107 content management system, LDU, osCommerce and Gallery. If an open source solution to meet your requirements doesn't exist, then maybe it's time we started making one!
